Coveside Small Wood Duck / Hooded Merganser House

This Coveside Wood Duck / Hooded Merganser House is designed and constructed to provide a perfect nest box for Wood Ducks and Hooded Mergansers which normally nest in tree cavities. This smaller nesting box is designed to limit "dump nesting". "Dump nesting" occurs when a number of females lay eggs in a single house, which sometimes results in clutches with over 70 eggs. Mississippi State University did a study of Wood Ducks in an effort to reduce this problem. A smaller nest box was designed and "dump nesting" was reduced. Although fewer ducklings are fledged from each box, the survival rate is improved. This house features a wire ladder for the ducklings to climb out when their mother calls ducklings to the protection of the open water at age one day. To simulate their natural nesting preferences and give added protection from predators, position this house on a pole in the open water.

About Wood Ducks and Hooded Mergansers:
Wood Ducks and Hooded Mergansers breed from British Columbia south to California, and from Montana east to Nova Scotia. The southern limit of their range is south to Texas and Florida. They are not found in the Rocky Mountains and Great Plains. Hooded Mergansers winter near the Pacific Coast north to Washington, and to New Jersey in East, rarely further north.
Mergansers prefer breeding on wooded rivers and ponds. In winter beside wooded rivers and ponds. They sometimes visit freshwater marshes in late summer and fall..

Like all Coveside products, this nesting box is hand crafted of natural wood and comes with wood chips for nesting. The front opens for observation and cleaning.
Dimensions: 17"High x 7 1/2"Wide x 15"Deep
