Coveside's, Sparrow Resistant Bluebird House is a "Kentucky style", slot entrance Bluebird house designed to discourage Sparrows and is North American Bluebird Society approved . Based on research at the University of Kentucky, bluebirds prefer the slot entrance to the more common circular hole. Since Sparrows prefer the opposite, they are much less likely to try to invade these bird houses. Sparrows also dislike a shallow 5" deep box while Bluebirds don't seem to mind. In case Sparrows continue to be a problem, a wooden insert is included to reduce the depth to 3 1/2", a depth Bluebirds will occupy, but Sparrows rarely use. This Coveside Wood Duck / Hooded Merganser House is designed and constructed to provide a perfect nest box for Wood Ducks and Hooded Mergansers which normally nest in tree cavities. This smaller nesting box is designed to limit "dump nesting". "Dump nesting" occurs when a number of females lay eggs in a single house, which sometimes results in clutches with over 70 eggs. Mississippi State University did a study of Wood Ducks in an effort to reduce this problem. A smaller nest box was designed and "dump nesting" was reduced. Although fewer ducklings are fledged from each box, the survival rate is improved. This house features a wire ladder for the ducklings to climb out when their mother calls ducklings to the protection of the open water at age one day.
